1.3 Course Aims and Learning Outcomes

 

This course aims to:

Provide an introduction to the sources of respirable crystalline silica exposure, an overview of the health effects of such exposures, basic approaches to assessing risk associated with such exposures and practicable means of controlling such exposures. As far as possible the course content will avoid the use of technical terminology.

On successful completion of this module the student should have a basic understanding of:

  • What is respirable crystalline silica
  • The common sources of exposure and sources of exposure of specific relevance to the candidate’s work environment
  • The health effects of exposure to crystalline silica
  • Basic approaches to assessing risk, including assessment of exposure
  • Practicable means of controlling exposure
